Latinx Heritage Month, Book 4

Jennine Capo Crucet’s collection of essays covers a range of points in her life, from her first year of college to her wedding/divorce to the 2016 election. Her narrative is colored by her experiences as the daughter of Cuban immigrants who grew up in Miami, a city where, as she notes, Cubans *are* the Whites, and how her life changes when she leaves.

There were so many times where I found myself nodding furiously and screaming EXACTLY! Capo Crucet’s way of explaining moments in her experiences are relatable and absolutely thoughts that have crossed my own mind at some point in time, and I’m certain I’m not alone here.

I appreciated how up front and honest she was in terms of her own identity – how as a Latina woman who was proud of the heritage that she grew up around in Miami, there were still moments outside of Miami when she used her White-passing looks to her advantage, not only for her physical safety but also to protect herself from the ignorance of others (look, if I was like her and also staying on a ranch where Fox News was playing in the background, you bet my ass would do the same. It wouldn’t work, but still.)

This acknowledgement organically leads into the related conversation of terms we use to identify ourselves. This larger conversation isn’t discussed in the book itself, but its an important one nonetheless that I’ve been seeing come up frequently over the last few months, especially in regards to how terms like People of Color and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) create a sort of false unity in regards to issues that disproportionately impact Black and Indigenous communities. Again, this isn’t discussed in the book, but it does feel like a natural follow up.
