ALL BOYS AREN’T BLUE, @iamgmjohnson

“When people ask me how I got into activism, I often say, “The first person you are ever an activist for is yourself.” If I wasn’t gonna fight for me, who else was?”

The guide every young queer person of color on the journey to self acceptance and self love could use. Positioning themselves as an older sibling type, writer George M. Johnson takes us through their life as they learn to embrace their Blackness and queerness with the support of their large, loving family, friends, and fraternity brothers.

The themes of gender identity, toxic masculinity, and Black joy lay the foundation for Johnson’s story. Their vulnerability – taking us through some of the most joyous and devastating moments of their life – is a kind you don’t always come across. While I understand the writing style may not be for everyone, it’s clear Johnson is speaking to young people who are still finding themselves. Clearly explaining how their experiences affected them in positive and negative ways makes it easier for others to name how they’re own experiences affect them.
